Like many people I’ve been meaning to get around to trying out an organic food delivery service for some time – well a couple of weeks ago I actually got around to doing it!
After a quick Google search for organic box deliveries in the North-East I found Riverford Organic Farms (riverford.co.uk) who seem to have delivery covered over most of the UK – they certainly delivered to me easily enough and I am miles from the city centre.
Unsure what to get I opted for the ‘Large Vegetable Box’ and the ‘Small Fruit Box’
When they arrived I was pretty pleased with the amounts and selection of vegetables – still definitely more expensive than standard supermarket fair but this is delivered and organic, obviously the it still had to pass the taste test.
Later that evening I cooked my first all organic dinner and have to say the that difference in taste was huge. Oddly enough, the place I noticed the biggest difference was where I expected to see one least: the potatoes. I suppose I’ve just become used to potatoes being a thing of just texture – a starch to put on the side of the plate. I’m happy to say that these were possibly the best I’d ever tasted.
All the vegetables tasted significantly better and I have to be honest, there was also something reassuring and more natural about them, vegetables were mis-shapen, the potatoes still had a little dirt on that needed to be scrubbed off and the apples weren’t polished to high wax-shine.
Needless to say I’ve now subscribed to a weekly organic vegetable box, fruit box and 6 organic eggs.
Now that my vegetable selection is determined by the season (as well it should be), I’ve ordered a seasonal recipe book: River Cafe Cookbook Green
