Windows Folder Coloured in Green – Encrypted Folders

I recently downloaded a WordPress theme I’d bought and unzipped/extracted in the usual manner on my Windows 7 machine only to notice that some of the folders were coloured green.Windows Folder in Green

I didn’t think anything of it until one of my co-workers attempted to open some of the files (the zip was downloaded to a network drive) and was unable to do so.

A quite bit of investigation showed that those folders had for some reason been encrypted when they were extracted.

The Fix

Encryption OPtionsIt’s a simple enough thing to fix:

  • Right click on the ‘green’ folder
  • Select Properties
  • In the folder properties dialog box, click Advanced
  • Uncheck the Encrypt contents to secure data option
  • In the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog, select Apple changes to this folder, subfolders and files

All done!
